Backup Your Blog With Blog Backup Online

We all know how important it is to backup your stuff! I’ve been running the WordPress plugin Wp-DBManager which does a good job of backing up my database, but I’m also trying out Blog Backup Online which claims to backup and restore all your blog content (posts and comments). At first sight this seems like a good service. At the moment it’s in Beta and therefore free. There is no information about the cost later. Registering a blog and scheduling backups was easy. A recently implemented service now saves all your post images.

A potentially very useful service is that you can transfer your blog to a different platform. So if you want to transfer all your content from Blogger to a self-hosted WordPress account for instance Blog Backup Online will do that for you. Currently restore is supported for Blogger, Windows Live Spaces, WordPress, and Live Journal.

Initially you need to make a full backup and then daily backups are run automatically. Backups are stored on their secure servers, can be saved to your own hard drive or emailed to you.

Quote from their site:

BlogBackupOnline is a web application that provides backup of your blog content. If you back up at all, trying to manually back up your blog is complex and tedious. BlogBackupOnline allows you to register your blog with a few simple clicks, and then maintains a current copy of your blog content at all times by backing up your blog daily. Set up BlogBackupOnline once and then stop worrying about backup.

With BlogBackupOnline, users register a blog they want to backup. Once the blog is registered, a full backup is taken of all entries. After being registered, BlogBackupOnline performs a daily incremental backup to find new entries, new comments, and other changed content. Once you register your blog with BlogBackupOnline, there is no need to do anything more. In the event you need to recall your blog, such as your provider deleting all your content, you can access your saved blog for a full recovery of your blog free of hassle and stress. BlogBackupOnline thereby saves you from what would otherwise be a disastrous and irreconcilable loss. blockquote1.gif

Has anyone used this service? As I haven’t yet had the need to do a restore I can’t report how this works. If you’ve used this service please share your experiences with us.

My dad uses blogger and I have a personal site but I know how much it would suck to lose my data or his so people running their own blogs do need to back it up

    Hi Janetra!

Well now, I followed your directions and arrived here in good health (grin)! The BlogBackupOnline seems to be tailor-made for the likes of me. I am convinced I have something of a “digital evil eye”: I only have to look sternly at one of my sites, and it disappears…

The easier it is to back up something, the more often I will do it. Thanks for bringing this subject up.

    Be well!

Hi Matt & Jaap Thanks for visiting and for your comments. So far it’s working well and doing daily backups. Haven’t tried a restore yet so I can’t comment. I would be interested to hear if anyone has used it to migrate to a different blog platform.

Thanks. Great tip on backing up a blog. I am very familiar with backing up local data within the office here but was looking for a solution that would help backup blog data that is hosted elsewhere.
